cbd oil for acne

In this modern era, where beauty and fitness are the definitions of everything good, medicine and science are working hard to create life-altering inventions. One such invention that has lately taken the medicinal market by storm is CBD oil.

CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a compound extracted from the hemp plant, which is slowly but quite effectively used as pain relievers, antidepressants, muscle improving agents and skincare products. The latter is what we are going to talk about in detail, in this article.

As we talk about skincare, one of the most reported skin problem, is acne. These dreadful little zits leave no one unharmed. Be it a teenager, a struggling mother of a newborn or an employee at Google, Acne haunts us all. Not only does acne cause physical pain, but it also affects a person’s appearance, which can sometimes have an adverse effect on their mental well-being.

Although there is solid research, proving the benefits of CBD oil for pain and inflammation, there is only a little research for the use of CBD for treating acne.

However, research done on a small scale, and thus far, it looks hopeful.

Slowly but steadily, CBD infused creams are being introduced in the market. Some well-known brands have also come up with their own line of CBD products for acne.

Few CBD oil creams we have tried for acne-prone skin, are listed below.

What is Acne?

Acne is an inflammation of the skin that occurs after the clogging of a pore.

Now, what is a pore? Our skin has tiny holes that help the skin breathe. These pores also excrete an oil, called sebum.

Sebum is a naturally producing oil that keeps the skin lubricated and fights dryness. Sometimes excess sebum mixes with dirt, dead skin or bacteria and can trap inside a pore, which results in a clogged pore.

Factors Causing Acne

One major factor of acne is the excessive production of Sebum. Other than that, conditions like hormonal imbalance, diet, stress and even usage of particular medicines can cause an outrage of acne.

Old School Methods Of Treating Acne

Given the beauty standards of today’s time, people have been trying all sorts of remedies to get rid of the acne curse. From chemical treatments like laser and skin peeling to using natural products such as fruit masks and gram flour to help treat acne.

CBD Oil And How It Can Treat Acne

With the advent of time, newer and better products developed every day. One such product that has clearly caught our eyes is CBD oil.

Despite little to no research, people are tremendously keen on using CBD infused products, as whatever little research that has been made, shows some shockingly positive results.

One such research was published online in July of 2014, by The Journal Of Clinical Investigation. The researchers used human skin cells and treated them with CBD.

The results were tremendously surprising, as not only did CBD stop the cells that produce sebum, from producing excess amounts of oil, but also interrupted the production of inflammatory cytokines, which is exactly what causes the redness and inflammation.

2 years later, another research strengthened the case. In the year 2016, a team of researchers working on CBD, found its antifungal and antibacterial properties, which proves that CBD can also be used to reduce the acne caused by pollutants, fungus and bacteria.

The little research going on CBD oil and acne proves that CBD oil not only helps eliminate the cause of acne, i.e. excessive sebum production, but with its anti-inflammatory properties fights the chemicals in our body that cause inflammation.

What is more surprising is that CBD doesn’t just stop the production of excess sebum, in fact it regulates it. This proves that if one has dry skin, CBD can help regulate the flow of sebum, which will help lubricate their skin and fight dryness.

Drawbacks Of Using CBD Oil For Acne

Just as there are positives, there are a few negatives as well, such as:

  1. Legality issues – Since there are several types of CBD, such as full spectrum, broad spectrum isolated, and all of these aren’t legal in all states. Hence, purchasing and travelling with these products can be a hassle.
  2. Lack of human research – For any new development, research is key. Despite having full potential, there is very little research about CBD and Acne, making it a little unreliable.

Method To Use CBD Oil For Acne

Well, there are two ways one can use CBD oil for acne.

  1. As an oral medication
  2. As a topical medication

Though we suggest topical application over oral, as topical application will target your acne directly. Also, orally taking CBD will exceed your chances of being exposed to its minor side effects such as diarrhea, fatigue and the likes.

As a topical medication, CBD oil is supposed to be mixed with another oil, which is called a carrier oil, before application.

Some common carrier oil choices are:

  1. Coconut oil
  2. Olive oil
  3. Almond oil
  4. Argan oil
  5. Shea butter

You can use any oil as a carrier, but make sure to choose the one that suits your skin the best.

What Do The Doctors Suggest?

Despite several small case researchers, all the doctors we contacted had one thing to say – Wait it out. Since there has been no large scale, research on live human skin, they don’t want to experiment into it.

They say, on personal levels, it is fine if we use CBD oil for acne, but with caution, keeping track of every little change, it makes to our skin.

However, prescribing CBD infused products to their patients is not yet on the books. But a few years down the lane, it is something most of the doctors look forward to.

User Recommendations

Acne has been causing far more trouble for people suffering than we can imagine. One such case we recently came across, is of a 25-year-old girl Rayleigh, Essex.

Her acne was causing immense trouble since the age of 17; her face was scarred, and so was her social life. No treatments worked, until the uprise of CBD oil. Since she had tried almost every given solution for acne, available on earth, she had no issues giving CBD a try, either.

From that day onwards, there was no looking back. After 8 years, the acne was finally toning down. The inflammation had gone down immensely, and so had the acne scars.

She used CBD oil in the form of capsules. AS she says, ‘There may not be scientific proof, but they worked for me.’

She has had such a life turning an experience that she is now selling those very capsules, across the UK to help more people like her, get rid of this dreadful curse.

Several bloggers have also taken up on this new trend and started using skincare products that have CBD infused. One such blogger, is Lindsey Unterberger, from Glamour.com.

She exchanged her entire makeup and skincare collection with CBD infused products, for one whole week. Though a week was too short to grasp any drastic changes, as she says, it was nonetheless a pleasant and fun experience.

There are a lot of products she recommends for daily use as well.

Final Thoughts

Despite the lack of research, CBD is growing in trend, and hundreds of people are trying out products made out of CBD. From pain relievers to antidepressant and now slowly but steadily CBD infused skin care products, especially those that help fight acne.

However, there is still some way to go, until large scale human research takes place. This will hopefully open a whole new dimension of ways CBD oil can treat acne and other skin-related issues.

While buying CBD products for treating acne or any other likely problem, make sure to contact a genuine company, who knows what they are doing. Make sure their products are 100% tried and tested.

Because with the growing trend of CBD, every small and large company wants to jump on to the bandwagon, without doing proper research and work, required for these products.

In fact, in 2016, a report was released that stated that out of 84 products tested for CBD percentage, only 18 products were accurately labelled. Which meant:

  1. Some were over labelled – they had less amount of CBD than as promised.
  2. Some under labelled – had more amounts of CBD than what was written on the label.
  3. While the rest were mis-labelled – which meant that they had little to no CBD.

One way to know for sure, if the product is genuine, is to see if the product tested via a third-party laboratory. This diminishes the margin of scamming and proves that the company is trustworthy.
